MechWarrior OnLine dips it's toes in pay to win

The pay to win element in MWO was something discussed even from the times the 1st hero mech apeeared in game. The issue, that still remains is that the Centurion chassis Yen-Lo-Wang, CN9-YLW variant, offers an unique attribute not possible with other variants, it allows the mounting of AC/20 in the center torso.

The debate is still going, but, with March Creative Director's update posted by BRYAN EKMAN yesterday a new heated discussion arises.
PGI wants to introduce consumables in game both for in game credits, C-Bills, and for cash only, MC.
As PGI explains: (source)

Examples of planned consumables:
Coolant Flush
Coolant Flush will come in two forms; C-bill purchased and MC purchased. The following shows how the two versions are balanced:
C-Bill Purchased Coolant Flush:
The amount of cooling provided by a coolant flush is determined by the number of Heat Sinks in your BattleMech. The following assumes a Mech with 10 Heat Sinks:
Small Coolant Flush will instantly reduce a BattleMech's current heat by 15%.
Medium Coolant Flush will instantly reduce a BattleMech's current heat by 20%.
Coolant Flush 1 and 2 are stackable.
Each Coolant Flush will take up 1 module slot.
The C-Bill Purchased Coolant Flush will allow a player to trigger a coolant flush twice during a match.
Upon using a Coolant Flush, the player will have to re-purchase the used Coolant Flush module after the match if they wish to use it again.
MC Purchased Coolant Flush:
The amount of cooling provided by a coolant flush is determined by the number of Heat Sinks in your BattleMech. The following assumes a Mech with 10 Heat Sinks:
Large Coolant Flush will instantly reduce a BattleMech's current heat by 35%.
Large Coolant Flush is not stackable with any other Coolant Flush module including itself.
Large Coolant Flush takes up 1 module slot.
The MC Purchased Large Coolant Flush allows a player to trigger a coolant flush once during a match.
Upon using a Large Coolant Flush, the player will have to re-purchase the used Large Coolant Flush module after the match if they wish to use it again.
C-Bill Coolant Flush and MC Coolant Flush are not stackable. That is, they are mutually exclusive meaning that you cannot equip the MC purchased coolant flush with either of the C-Bill coolant flushes.

Basically, you can mount a small and a medium one at the same time but you cannot mount a large one with any of the others. Another way to look at it is C-Bills only or MC only.

CB Coolant Flush Tier 1 = 15% cooling of TOTAL heat on your Mech.
CB Coolant Flush Tier 2 = 20% cooling of TOTAL heat on your Mech.
TOTAL cooling of your Mech is 35%.
MC Coolant Flush = 35% cooling of TOTAL heat on your Mech.

The problem with this is that the MC bought item does the same job of two C-Bills items and occupies only one slot, instead of 2. Also, you flush 35% of mech's heat in one single use, not two.

The other problem with MC only items is that they will be: Coolant Flush, Air Strikes, and Artillery Strikes. And these are the ones we know about, from the article.
On paper, the C-Bill strikes total to the same amount of potential damage, but! not being able to trigger them simultaneously - not the same with one hit MC strike.

Huge problem is the limit of the consumable slots each mech will have, not known at this moment. The problem is C-Bills consumables to achieve potentially same result to MC consumable, need to occupy two slots.
Let's suppose the number of slots is 3, what one would occupy them?
for C-Bills only:

  • small coolant flush
  • medium coolant flush
  • medium strike (in airstrike or artilery strike fllavor)
or:
  • medium coolant flush
  • medium air strike
  • medium artillery strike

for MC only:

  • large coolant flush
  • large air strike
  • large artillery strike

Pay to win? bet your ass it is!

  1. Yeah, the pay to win element kinda killed my will to play this game, so I agree with what you wrote. I took a break from the game for some time now, but I saw in an article on http://mmo-play.com/ that they finally set a release date. So I don't know, maybe I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and hope that when they release it, the pay to win won't be that hardcore. One can only hope :) Still, a good game imo.
